The Virginia Cavaliers (11-2) rallied to score five consecutive goals in the first half after the Lady Monarchs (5-4) tied the game at 4-4 thanks to five consecutive draw controls, with Tyler Leachman recording the first two in the streak. Leachman added two goals and Nikki Lieb had two goals and an assist in that run as No. 2/3/4/5 Virginia surged out to a 9-4 lead at halftime. Leachman led all players with three goals and four assists. Lieb led all players with four draw controls while adding two goals and two assists; Jen Holden had three caused turnovers and five ground balls to lead Virginia defensively. ODU’s Kelly Kimener recorded a hat trick for the Lady Monarchs while Caroline Jacobs led all players with seven ground balls. The Cavaliers outdrew ODU 16-9 with Lieb notching four and Bordley and Leachman each controlling three.
Leachman’s seven points giver her 229 for her career and she moved into fourth place all-time in Cavalier history, passing All-American Dawn Wisnewski (’89) who had 224 in her career. Leachman also moved into ninth all-time in career assists with 54, edging Molly Cangemi who had 53 from 1999-2002. Blair Weymouth moved into fourth place all-time for goals as a first year, passing Lauren Aumiller, who had 33 in 2000. Lieb’s four draw controls give her 116 in her career, and she moves into fifth all-time, passing Morgan Thalenberg (’04) and Elaine Maddox (’87).
The Cavaliers jumped on top as Lieb picked up an overthrown ball inthe midfield and advanced the ball into the Virginia attack zone where the Hoos attempted a couple shots before a goal circle violation gave the ball to Whitaker Hagerman on the 12. She fed Leachman who was cutting down the arc, and Leachman’s goal at 3:39 put the Cavaliers on the board at 1-0. A Ginger Miles save started a fast break that saw Claire Bordley lead Weymouth with a pass, and Weymouth scored at 8:45 for a 2-0 lead. Old Dominion won the draw but Holden caused a turnover and Jess Wasilewski picked up the ground ball to give Virginia possession, and at the other end of the field Kim Connors fed Kate Breslin, who scored at 10:20 for a 3-0 Virginia lead. Again Holden caused a turnover and this time scooped up the ground ball herself, which started another fast break in which Leachman fed Hagerman for a goal at 11:38, putting the Cavaliers up by four at 4-0. The Cavalier defense of Ginger Miles, who had two saves in the opening 15 minutes, Julie Hauser, Jessy Morgan, Bordley and Holden kept ODU off the board for the first 15:30 of the game.
The Lady Monarchs then went on a four-goal run, scoring all four goals in 5:35 with four different players notching scores. Jessica Noone fed Ashley Stanwick at 15:30, and then Caroline Jacobs converted a Katie Veneziale pass 36 seconds before Noone rolled the crease to score, and an 8-meter goal by Kelly Kimener at 21:05 tied the game at 4-4.
Leachman won the ensuing draw and brought the ball upfield, but lost it briefly before ODU stepped out of bounds on the clear and Leachman gained possession on the endline with one defender marking her and the ODU keeper in her circle and no one else above the restraining line. Leachman took the ball to the cage and scored at 25:36, putting Virginia back on top 5-4. Leachman again won the draw and Virginia worked the ball into the arc where Lieb was fouled on a drive to the cage. She converted the 8-meter at 27:07 for a two-goal lead at 6-4. Lieb won the next draw and immediately fed Leachman, who scored 13 seconds after Lieb for a three-goal lead. Bordley won the ensuing draw and Virginia quickly advanced the ball into the arc where Connors dumped the ball into an unmarked Wasilewski, who scored 20 seconds after Leachman for a four-goal lead at 27:40, giving the Cavaliers their own four-goal run in 2:04. A Bordley caused turnover and ground ball in the arc gave the Cavaliers possession, and at the other end Lieb was fouled going for a loose ball. She converted the 8-meter shot for a goal at 29:55, giving UVa a 9-4 lead at halftime.
Virginia made it a six-goal run as Bordley picked up a loose ball in the midfield and the Hoos advanced the ball to the other end where Leachman dumped the ball into Connors, who scored at 32:01 for a 10-4 lead. Noone answered with a drive to the cage a minute later to keep the Lady Monarchs within five.
The Cavaliers answered right back with a pair of goals in ten seconds as Holden scooped up a dropped ODU pass and in the Virginia attacking third Leachman dumped the ball into Weymouth for a goal at 40:09. Lieb won the draw, took it right to the cage before slipping it to Breslin, who scored 10 seconds later for a 12-5 lead. Ashley McCulloch controlled a loose ball in the midfield off a broken clear and Virginia settled the ball before Megan O’Malley fed Connors for a goal at 45:30. ODU then scored a pair of goals in 40 seconds as Kaelyn Schival scored at 50:17 and Kimener scored her second goal off a spin in the arc at 50:47 to cut the deficit to 13-7.
A Connors draw started a fast break in which Wasilewski got the ball at the top of the arc, spun around her defender, and scored 18 seconds after Kimener to double the ODU score at 14-7. Three minutes later Kimener completed her hat trick with an 8-meter goal at 54:35, but the Cavaliers answered right back as Chelsea Metz won her second consecutive draw control and in the Virginia attacking arc Leachman dumped the ball into Bordley, who scored at 55:38 for the final goal.
The Cavaliers return to action next Wednesday, April 12 as they host the Patriots of George Mason. The game is the final regular season home game for the Hoos and draw is set for 7:00 pm.
