NO. 18 VIRGINIA HEADS TO DUKE FOR ITS THIRD ROAD ACC SERIES
No. 18 Virginia conitnues Atlantic Coast Conference action when the Cavaliers travel to Durham, N.C. for a three-game series with the Duke Blue Devils. Virginia shut out in-state foe Richmond, 5-0, Wednesday to snap a three-game losing streak. Sophomore left-handed pitcher Sean Doolittle (5-1, 2.14 ERA) is slated to start Friday while freshman RHP Jacob Thompson (5-1, 2.52 ERA) will start Saturday. Senior lefty Mike Ballard (4-2, 2.56 ERA) is the starter for Sunday.
SCOUTING DUKE
The Blue Devils (10-24) won their first conference series of the season last weekend as they took two of three games from Boston College on the road. Jonathan Anderson is the team’s top hitter batting .328 (40-of-122). Shortstop Brett Bartles is hitting has scored 26 runs on 43 hits with a team-high 28 RBIs. Jimmy Gallagher has a team-high 29 runs and 17 extra-base hits. Duke is hitting .262 and has a 6.20 team ERA.
SERIES VS. DUKE
Virginia leads the all-time series with Duke, 79-48-1. The Cavaliers swept the series last season in Charlottesville, 7-1, 7-2 and 10-4. Brian O’Connor is 6-1 all-time against the Blue Devils. Virginia has swept each of the three-game series under O’Connor. Duke won a meeting in the 2004 ACC Tournament, 6-4.
HOOS IN THE POLLS
Virginia ranks in the Top 25 in college baseball polls for the third straight week. The Cavaliers are No. 18 in the USA Today Coaches’ Poll, No. 20 in Collegiate Baseball and 22nd in the National Collegiate Baseball Writer’s Association (NCBWA) Poll. SEBaseball.com has UVa as the 18th best team in the nation, while the Hoos are 17th in the Rosenblattreport.com poll. Eight Atlantic Coast Conference teams are ranked this week in the USA Today Coaches’ Poll and the Collegiate Baseball Poll.
ABOUT THE CAVALIERS
Virginia improved to 25-8 on the season after winning at Richmond, 5-0. Pat McAnaney, Michael Schwimer and Casey Lambert combined for a five-hit shutout while Tom Hagan and Jeremy Farrell each had a pair of hits. The Cavaliers look to bounce back in league play after losing three games last weekend at #17 NC State. Virginia lost the first game of the NC State series, 10-2. UVa led for most of game two against the Wolfpack including a 9-4 lead in the eighth, but the Wolfpack scored six runs in the last two innings to rally for the win … The Cavaliers are hitting .340 as a team. Virginia’s pitching staff has posted a 2.56 ERA through 33 games while holding opponents to a .209 batting average … UVa pitchers have struck out 293 batters in 295.2 innings.
HOO NOTES
– Senior Utility Tom Hagan had a good week for the Cavaliers as he hit .563 (9-for-16) and drove in eight runs. He scored seven runs of his own, drew six walks and stole seven bases.
– Freshman second baseman David Adams led Virginia in the NC State series hitting .455 (5-for-11). Adams hit .450 (9-for-20) last week with five runs scored and three RBI.
– Junior outfielder Brandon Marsh continued his hot hitting for the Cavs. Marsh hit .421 (.8-for-19) last week with five runs scored, three extra-base hits and two RBI. He’s now hitting .473 (44-for-93) with 26 runs scored, 14 RBI and 10 extra-base hits.
– Sophomores Pat McAnaney, Michael Schwimer and junior Casey Lambert combined for UVa’s fifth shutout of the season in the 5-0 win at Richmond. McAnaney struck out four in seven innings allowing three hits. Schwimer struck out two in one inning of work while Lambert pitched the final inning.
– Junior center fielder Tim Henry hit his first career home run in the series finale at NC State. It was Henry’s 26th RBI of the season and Virginia’s 10th home run of the season.
