CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 8 ranked Virginia men’s tennis team suffered its first conference loss in two years Friday, falling to No. 14 Miami 4-3 at the Snyder Tennis Center. The Cavaliers had their 24-match ACC winning streak snapped as they fall to 17-6 on the season, 7-1 in the ACC.
The Cavaliers opened the contest by winning the doubles point for the 12th consecutive match. The team of Darrin Cohen (Lafayette, Calif.) and Doug Stewart scored an 8-2 win over Josh Cohen and Eric Hechtman at No. 3 doubles. The No. 27 ranked team of Rylan Rizza (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) and Nick Meythaler (Owensboro, Ky.) clinched the opening point for Virginia with their 8-5 win over No. 30 ranked Luigi D”Agord and Daniel Vallverdu. Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va.) and Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) completed the doubles sweep with an 8-6 win at No. 2 over Tim Krebs and Vivek Subramanian.
In singles, the Hurricanes (14-3, 6-2) drew even when No. 5 ranked D’Agord defeated No. 9 ranked Devvarman at No. 1 singles. The Cavaliers retook the lead as Huey downed Krebs in straight sets at No. 4 singles. Miami drew even again as Vallverdu defeated Stewart at the No. 2 position, then took the lead, 3-2, as John Hoyes defeated Cohen at No. 6 singles. Virginia rallied to tie the match at 3-3 when Rizza downed Cohen in straight sets at No. 3 singles. However, in the final match on the courts, Hechtman defeated Marko Miklo (Bratislava, Slovakia) at No. 5 singles to give Miami the victory.
“Give Miami a lot of credit, they are a great team and fought hard today,” said Virginia head coach Brian Boland. “We need to be able to learn from this match and continue to improve as we wind down the regular season and head into the postseason. The ACC has gotten so tough, and it is great for the conference to have so many strong teams at the top of the league that can all compete at a high level.”
The Cavaliers close out their home season on Sunday as they host Florida State. Match time is 12:30 p.m. Following the match, the Cavalier seniors will be honored.
