CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia softball team hosts its final midweek doubleheader of the season on Wednesday (Apr. 12) when it plays in-state rival James Madison at The Park. The first game of the twinbill is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
The Cavaliers enter the contests with a 20-17 overall record. In its last action, UVa split a doubleheader with Atlantic Coast Conference foe Florida State on Apr. 9. Virginia won the first game of the twinbill 1-0, while the Seminoles earned a split with an 8-5 win in the nightcap.
James Madison stands at 16-18 on the season. The Dukes were swept in a three-game conference series by Georgia State Apr. 8-9 in Atlanta, Ga. The Dukes lost 5-4 and 7-5 in nine innings on Apr. 8 and 7-2 on Apr. 9.
Virginia leads the all-time series with James Madison 8-2 since the Dukes became a varsity program in 2002. Through the years, the two teams have met 27 times with UVa leading the series 17-10. The two teams split a pair of 1-0 decisions last season in Harrisonburg on Mar. 30. James Madison took the opener while UVa earned a split with the victory in the nightcap.
Second-year first baseman Whitney Holstun (Escondido, Calif./Escondido) is hitting .286 (24-84) for the Cavaliers. She had hit three home runs and driven in 15 runs. Fourth-year shortstop Sara Larquier (Burbank, Calif./John Burroughs), the ACC’s all-time RBI leader with 177, is hitting .275 (30-109) with six home runs and 23 RBI. In the circle, fourth-year Erin Horn (Tallahassee, Fla./Leon) sports an 8-7 record with a 2.03 ERA.
