The Cavalier women’s indoor track and field team earned an ACC 2005-06 Winter Sportsmanship Award, as announced by the league office today. Teams receiving the awards have conducted themselves with a high degree of character and good sportsmanship, as determined by a vote of the league’s players and coaches.

“To be recognized by your peers for outstanding sportsmanship is certainly an honor,” said Virginia head coach Randy Bungard, who is leading his team to the ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Winston-Salem, NC this weekend. “We have phenomenal athletes, and for them to achieve off the track as well as on the track is a testament to the whole person that they are.”

The conference presents sportsmanship awards for each of its 25 sponsored sports. The concept of these awards was created by the ACC Student Athlete Advisory Committee in an effort to recognize teams who earned the utmost regard from their peers during competition. As is stated in the conference’s Mission Statement, “It [the ACC] strongly adheres to the principles of integrity and sportsmanship, and supports the total development of the student-athlete and each member institution’s athletics department staff, with the intent of producing enlightened leadership for tomorrow.”

The men’s and women’s track teams will compete this weekend in the ACC Outdoor Championships held at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC.
