New London, NC – The Virginia men’s golf team is in 10th place after the opening round of the ACC Championship at the Old North State Club in New London, N.C. The Cavaliers opened the three-day 54-hole event by shooting 5-over 293. Carter Henderson led Virginia by shooting 1-under 71 to stand in a tie for 12th place.
Despite the team’s position in the standings, only forth-ranked Georgia Tech and 19th-ranked North Carolina have put some distance between themselves and the rest of the field. The Yellow Jackets shot 12-under 276 to grab the first-round lead. UNC is just two shots behind Tech. The teams between third and 10th are separated by only nine shots.
Georgia Tech’s Michael Barbosa shot 7-under 65 to take in the lead in the race for medalist honors. Florida State’s Matthew Savage is in second place at 67. A total of 20 players managed to shoot below par at the Old North State Club, which is hosting the ACCs for the fifth consecutive year.
Andrea Signor was the Cavalier’s number-two scorer. He shot 1-over 73 during his first round of play at the ACCs. Eamonn McLoughlin carded a 74 while Conrad Von Borsig shot 75 and Brad Tilley completed his round with a 76.
Henderson started his day with a birdie on the par-5 first hole but fell back to par at the turn. He managed birdies on No. 10 and 11, but a bogie on 15 cost him a shot at finishing in the top-10 on the first day.
McLoughlin led the Cavaliers on the first day with five birdies, but a five bogies and a double bogie balanced out his out-and-down opening round.
