CARY, N.C. – The No. 9 ranked Virginia men’s tennis team opened their quest to win their third consecutive ACC Tournament by downing No. 24 Clemson 5-0 in a quarterfinal match Friday afternoon at the Cary Tennis Center. With the win, the Cavaliers reach the 20-win plateau (20-7) for the fourth consecutive season.
The Cavaliers came out strong and took a 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point. The team of Darrin Cohen (Lafayette, Calif.) and Doug Stewart (Malibu, Calif.) downed Brett Twente and Paul Koenke 8-3 at No. 3 doubles. Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) and Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va.) then clinched the opening point with their 8-4 win over Sander Koning and Ryan Young at No. 2 doubles.
In singles, the Cavalier advantage increased to 2-0 as Cohen topped Koenke 6-2, 6-4 at No. 6 singles. Devvarman made the score 3-0 as he topped Clement Reix 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 1 singles position. Huey clinched the dual match with his 6-3, 6-3 win over Young at No. 4 singles. Seconds later, Stewart closed out a 6-1, 6-4 win over Jarmaine Jenkins at No. 3 singles to make the final score 5-0. The final two matches were abandoned.
The Cavaliers needed just 2:25 minutes to record their seventh consecutive ACC Tournament victory.
“I thought the team played extremely well for a first round ACC Tournament match,” said Virginia head coach Brian Boland. “We are looking forward to another great match tomorrow against either Miami or Wake Forest.”
The Cavaliers will meet the Miami-Wake Forest winner in Saturday’s semifinal. That match is slated for 1:00 p.m. at the Cary Tennis Center.
