Virginia football coach Al Groh announced the lineup, format and head coaches for Saturday’s Spring Football Game today. The contest will take place at 3:30 p.m. at The Carl Smith Center Home of David A Harrison III Field at Scott Stadium. The day’s events begin at 1:30 p.m. with Fan Fest at the stadium. In the event of inclement weather, Fan Fest will move from the north end of the stadium to the west side of the stadium.
Assistant head coaches John Garrett and Steve Bernstein will direct the Blue and Orange teams Saturday. Garrett, UVa’s assistant head coach for the offense and wide receivers coach, will direct the Blue Team. Bernstein, the assistant head coach and defensive backs coach, will coach the Orange squad.
Highlighting the Orange team are defensive standouts Marcus Hamilton and Chris Long. Hamilton, a senior cornerback, led the ACC with six interceptions last season and has been named to the Lott Trophy Watch List presented to the nation’s top defensive impact player. Long is the lone returning starter on the defensive line after making 46 tackles last year.
The Orange team will be quarterbacked by the duo of junior Kevin McCabe and redshirt freshman Jameel Sewell. They will benefit by having junior tight ends Tom Santi and Jonathan Stupar on their roster. Senior Michael Johnson and sophomore Cedrick Peerman will line up at running back for the Orange. Johnson rushed for 267 yards last year while Peerman accounted for 237.
The Blue Team will feature senior quarterback Christian Olsen, who has led the first team offense during Virginia’s spring practice session. The Cavaliers top-two returning receivers, seniors Deyon Williams and Fontel Mines, are included on the Blue Team offense along with senior running back Jason Snelling, UVa’s top returning rusher. Williams led Virginia last year with 58 receptions for 767 yards and seven scores. Mines added 28 catches for 345 yards and a pair of scores. Snelling rushed for 325 yards, averaging 5.6 yards per attempt.
The Blue Team’s defense features only one returning starter, junior linebacker Jermaine Dias. Sophomore cornerback Chris Cook, who missed half of last season due to a broken leg, returns to the field for the Blue Squad. Also in the secondary is classmate Mike Brown.
The Spring Game is scheduled to include four 10-minute quarters. Just prior to kickoff, Virginia will announce the Rock Weir Award Winners as the most improved players during the spring. The team captains will also be announced at that time.
