Charlottesville, Va. – The top-ranked Virginia men’s lacrosse team closed an undefeated regular season with a 21-10 win over Bellarmine in a “Senior Day” contest this afternoon at Klöckner Stadium.
The Cavaliers enter next weekend’s Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament as the only undefeated team in the nation with a 12-0 record. Bellarmine, playing only its second season at Division I, falls to 6-8 overall.
Matt Poskay and Matt Ward, playing their final regular season game at Klöckner Stadium, were among a quartet of Cavaliers to lead the way with three goals apiece. Sophomore Ben Rubeor and freshman Danny Glading also tallied three times. Poskay and Glading also added two assists to lead the way with five total points. Glading’s roommate Garrett Billings, coming off a seven-point performance against North Carolina two weeks ago, scored two goals and assisted on three others.
The Cavaliers got off to a quick start once again, scoring in the opening minute for the third game in a row. Glading took a pass from Poskay and beat goalie J.C. Hutchins with 48 seconds elapsed. Senior midfielder Kyle Dixon scored his only goal of the game a minute and 32 seconds later. Glading notched his second of the game at the 9:24 mark as the Cavaliers built a quick 3-0 lead. Dixon assisted on back-to-back goals by Poskay a minute apart midway through the opening quarter. Glading’s third goal in the first 10 minutes extended the Cavaliers’ lead to 6-0.
Adam Gardner ended the Virginia run with Bellarmine’s first goal with 3:03 remaining in the quarter. He scored four times to become the first opponent to score more than three goals against the Cavaliers this season.
Virginia roared back with two goals by Rubeor and an extra man tally by Poskay 52 seconds apart in the final two minutes of the first period.
The Knights opened the second quarter by scoring two of the first three goals to trim UVa’s lead to 10-3, but it was as close they would get as Virginia scored the final six goals of the first half to take a 16-3 lead at halftime.
Virginia head coach Dom Starsia rested most of his starters in the second half as the reserves saw extended playing time. All 36 players in uniform saw action for Virginia.
Gardner scored three goals in the third quarter as Bellarmine outscored Virginia 5-1 in the quarter.
Cavalier sophomore Ryan Kelly scored twice in the fourth quarter, including a man-down goal with 13:18 remaining in the game.
Virginia outshot the Knights 45-23 and had a huge advantage in ground balls–66 to 32.
Virginia returns to action in the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament next weekend in Baltimore. The Cavaliers have a bye into the championship game and will face the winner of Friday’s semifinal match-up between Maryland and North Carolina on Sunday (April 30) at 3:30 pm. The game will be televised regionally by Comcast SportsNet, Fox Sports Net South, SunSports and New England Sports Network (NESN).
Bellarmine closes its season next Saturday at home against St. Andrews at 1 pm.
