CHARLOTTESVILLE – University of Virginia men’s head basketball coach Dave Leitao said Saturday (April 22) that assistant coach Rob Lanier is staying at Virginia. Lanier’s name had recently been mentioned as a candidate for a position opening in a program at another school.
“I’m pleased Rob Lanier is remaining as a member of our coaching staff,” Leitao said. “Rob has made significant contributions to our program and I look forward to continuing to work with him. Rob is an integral part of what I consider an outstanding staff.”
The 2005-06 season was Leitao’s first as men’s head basketball coach at Virginia. Lanier joined Leitao’s staff in May of last year.
Prior to coming to Virginia, Lanier was the head coach at Siena College for four years. Before becoming the head coach at Siena, Lanier was an assistant coach at the University of Texas for two years, an assistant coach at Rutgers University for two years and an assistant coach at St. Bonaventure University for five years. He began his coaching career at Niagara University where he was a graduate assistant coach for one year and a restricted earnings coach for one year.
