CHARLOTTESVILLE – J.R. Reynolds and Sean Singletary were named co-recipients of the University of Virginia men’s basketball team’s Bill Gibson Cavalier of the Year Award for 2005-06 on Thursday (April 27). Reynolds and Singletary were recognized at the team’s awards picnic.
Reynolds, a junior guard from Roanoke, Va., also received the award as the team’s Defensive Player of the Year. He averaged 17.0 points, 3.1 rebounds and 3.1 assists a game, and earned third-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors for the 2005-06 season. Reynolds scored in double figures in each of the last 24 games of the season and scored at least 20 points in nine games. He ranked eighth in the ACC in scoring and ninth in free throw percentage (.776, 128-165).
Singletary, a sophomore guard from Philadelphia, Pa., also received the award for most assists. He averaged 17.7 points, 4.4 rebounds and 4.2 assists a game, and earned first-team All-ACC honors. Singletary is the first Virginia men’s basketball player to earn first-team All-ACC honors since Bryant Stith in 1992. Singletary ranked third in the ACC in free throw percentage (.845, 125-148), fifth in scoring, fifth in steals (54, 1.86 spg.), sixth in assists and eighth in minutes played (982, 33.86 mpg.).
Senior guard Billy Campbell (Atlanta, Ga.) received both the Academic Achievement Award and the Michael McCann Leadership Award. He joined the Virginia program as a walk-on after participating in open tryouts prior to the 2002-03 season. Campbell saw the most extensive action of his career this past season. He played in 26 games, starting two, and averaged 1.3 points and one rebound a game.
Junior forward Jason Cain (Philadelphia, Pa.) received the award for most rebounds. He averaged 7.6 rebounds and 7.4 points a game during the 2005-06 season. Cain ranked seventh in the ACC in overall rebounding (229, 7.6 rpg.), tied for eighth in offensive rebounding (87, 2.9 orpg.) and tied for ninth in double-doubles with six. He totaled double figures in rebounds in nine games.
Virginia finished the 2005-06 season with an overall record of 15-15 and participated in the National Invitation Tournament.
