CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The University of Virginia softball team closed out regular season Atlantic Coast Conference play with a 1-0 victory over Boston College Sunday (Apr. 30) at Shea Field in the final contest of a three-game series. Second-year left fielder Lindsey Preuss’ (La Plata. Md.) homer proved to be the lone run of the game. With the win, UVa improves to 27-23 overall and 7-13 in the ACC, while BC falls to 21-24 overall and 6-15 in the conference.
Third-year Coty Tolar (Marietta, Ga.) pitched an outstanding game for Virginia as she picked up the victory to improve to 5-4 on the season. In 6.2 innings, Tolar allowed only four hits and struck out two batters. She only threw only 66 pitches in the contest. Fourth-year Erin Horn (Tallahassee, Fla.) registered the final out with a strikeout with runners on first and second to record her UVa single season record fourth save of the year. Horn also owns the school mark with nine career saves.
Preuss broke up Amanda Klimczak’s no-hit bid with a deep solo home run to left field to left off the fifth inning. It marked Preuss’ second home run of the season.
Klimczak was the hard-luck losing pitcher as she allowed just one run on two hits. Klimczak (5-5) struck out seven and walked one in the complete-game effort.
Third-year catcher Michelle Salmiery (San Jose, Calif.) registered Virginia’s only other hit in the contest.
Virginia returns to action on Tuesday (May 2) when it travels to Towson, Md., for a 4:00 p.m. doubleheader against the Towson Tigers.
