Guyer, No. 11 UVa Baseball Walk Off with Win Over Mountaineers, 6-3

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – – Brandon Guyer hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth as No. 11 Virginia rallied with four runs in the ninth to defeat Mount St. Mary’s, 6-3, on “Turn Back the Clock” night Tuesday at Davenport Field. Casey Lambert (3-2) recorded the final out to earn his third win of the season for the Cavaliers (39-10), who won their 39th game of the season. Guyer ended up 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Brandon Marsh finished 2-for-5 for the Cavaliers, who out-hit the Mountaineers, 11-7.

“What a great way to go into our exam break,” UVa head baseball coach Brian O’Connor said. “Our guys came up with clutch hits at the right time. Brandon (Guyer) has been swinging the bat really well for us lately. This was a total team effort from our pitchers and our hitters. Mount St. Mary’s played us tough and our guys responded to the challenge.”

Tim Henry and Beau Seabury each had a hit and an RBI for UVa. Shooter Hunt started the game for Virginia and struck out six in six innings while holding Mount St. Mary’s to one run on four hits. Michael Schwimer pitched 2.2 innings allowing two runs, one earned, and adding three strikeouts. Lambert recorded the last out in the top of the ninth. Andrew Germuth held Virginia to one run on five hits in six innings and had five strikeouts for the Mountaineers. Bucky Kosyk suffered his first loss of the season as he gave up four runs on four hits in 2/3 of an inning.

Virginia loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth. Henry led off with a single to right field before advancing on a fielder’s choice by Marsh. Sean Doolittle laid down a bunt single giving the Hoos runners with no outs. Adams’ sacrifice fly scored Henry tying the game, 3-3. Guyer then drilled his sixth home run over the wall in left center giving the Hoos its second walk-off win of the season.

Josh Vittek’s two-run home run in the top of the eighth broke a 1-1 tie to put the Mountaineers ahead, 3-1. Virginia answered with a run in the bottom of the eighth. Guyer led off with a double to right center. Beau Seabury’s two-out RBI single brought him in to make it, 3-2.

The Cavaliers rallied from a 1-0 deficit in the bottom of the third. Jeremy Farrell singled to lead off and later scored when he slid home safely on Tim Henry’s squeeze bunt fielder’s choice to make it, 1-1.

Mount St. Mary’s jumped out to the 1-0 lead in the top of the first on Stephan Fay’s two-out RBI single up the middle.

Matt Trusch led Mount St. Mary’s going 2-for4 at the plate. Vittek finished 1-for-4 with two RBIs.

Virginia takes 10 days off before returning home to host No. 1 North Carolina at Davenport Field, May 12-14. Tickets are still available and additional bleachers will be brought in for next weekend’s series.
