Devvarman, Boland Take Top State Tennis Honors

CHARLOTTESVILLE – Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) was named State Player of the Year and Brian Boland was named State Coach of the Year Tuesday when the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) announced its men’s tennis all-state team. In addition to Devvarman, Rylan Rizza (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.), Nick Meythaler (Owensboro, Ky.), Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va.), Doug Stewart (Malibu, Calif.) and Darrin Cohen (Lafayette, Calif.) earned all-state recognition.
Devvarman and Rizza were named first team all-state in singles, while the team of Rizza and Meythaler were first team all-state in doubles. Huey and Stewart earned second team all-state honors in singles, while the teams of Devvarman and Huey and Cohen and Stewart earned second team all-state honors in doubles.
Devvarman earned All-American status this season in which he posted a 31-13 singles record. Last month, he reached the final of the 2006 NCAA Singles Championship and ended the season ranked No. 8 nationally in the final ITA rankings. Devvarman became just the second Cavalier in history to finish the season ranked in the top 10.
Rizza posted a 30-16 singles record in 2006, earning All-ACC honors for the third consecutive season. He reached the second round of the NCAA Singles Championship for the second consecutive year, finishing the season with a No. 50 national ranking.
Rizza and Meythaler became the second Cavalier doubles team to earn All-American status after compiling a 16-5 record this season. They participated in the NCAA Doubles Championship, reaching the second round, and finished the year ranked No. 9 nationally. They become the second Cavalier duo to finish the year ranked in the top ten.
Huey had a 31-14 singles record this season and finished the year ranked No. 67 nationally. An All-ACC honoree, he was ranked as high as No. 6 nationally this season, after reaching the quarterfinals of the ITA All-American Championships in the fall.
Stewart had a 14-18 singles record this year and was ranked No. 85 nationally at the end of the season. He earned All-ACC honors for the fourth consecutive year and was ranked as high as No. 6 nationally during the season.
The team of Devvarman and Huey posted a 22-9 record this season. They were ranked as high as No. 11 nationally during the season. Stewart and Cohen had a 22-7 record this season, as they won Flight 3 in the ACC. They were ranked as high as No. 25 nationally this year.
Boland was named State Coach of the Year after leading the Cavaliers to a 24-9 record this season. Virginia reached the NCAA Quarterfinals for the second consecutive year and won a share of its third straight ACC regular season crown. The Cavaliers also had their first ever No. 1 national ranking this year.
This year marked the first time VaSID has selected an all-state team in tennis. The organization¹s university division includes all of the state¹s 14 NCAA Division I institutions.
