CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – – Junior midfielder Nico Colaluca (Coventry, R.I.) and senior midfielder Ian Holder (Norfolk, Va.) each netted one goal and No. 3 Virginia picked up its third shutout in defeating George Mason, 2-0, Saturday afternoon at Klockner Stadium. Virginia moved to 3-0-0 on the season while the Patriots fell to 1-1-0).

“That was a good win for us,” UVa head coach George Gelnovatch said. “We played a different combination of guys. We kept up the pressure, scored a pair of goals and came away with the result. This was a physical game, which hopefully, prepares us for a tough match with UCLA on Monday.”

Colauca gave the Cavaliers a 1-0 lead at the 29:13 mark. He received a long pass up the right side of the field from Sean Hinkle (Fredericksburg, Va.). Colaluca dribbled around to the upper left corner of the 18-yard box, before firing a shot from 20 yards out. It was his first goal of the season.

Holder extended the UVa lead to 2-0 in the 67th minute. He headed in Jeremy Barlow’s corner kick for his first goal of the season.

Michael Giallombardo (Manalapan, N.J.) recorded his first career shutout in his first career start for the Cavaliers. He played all 90 minutes in goal and tallied two saves.

Virginia out-shot Mason, 12-6, and held an 11-2 advantage on corner kicks. Mason’s Josh Fleming led the Patriots with four shots. Fleming’s last shot on goal in the 64th minute almost tied the game. He headed a corner kick from Irvin Martinez that Barlow cleared out off the line to keep the Cavaliers ahead, 1-0.

Sean Kelley played 90 minutes in goal for the Patriots and recorded four saves.

Virginia will now host No. 6 UCLA at 7 p.m. Monday night. The game was originally scheduled for Sunday evening was moved to Monday.
