CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia women’s soccer team was upset 1-0 by Seton Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Virginia Nike Soccer Classic at Klockner Stadium. The loss snapped the Cavaliers’ school record 14-game home winning streak and dropped their record to 4-2-0 on the season. The Pirates improve to 3-3-0.
“We are obviously disappointed with the result,” head coach Steve Swanson said. “We were not as sharp as we needed to be, especially against a team that was as organized as they were today. Give Seton Hall credit, they played hard and executed their game plan. They also took advantage of their one scoring chance.”
The Cavaliers outshot the Pirates 18-2 in the contest, by Seton Hall’s Alli Donofrio made her one shot count in the 63rd minute. She got to a ball on the left side, and fired a looping shot just inside the far post from 30 yards out.
Georgia won the day’s first game 4-0 over George Mason. With all four teams going 1-1-0 in the tournament, the Bulldogs captured the tournament title with a +2 goal differential. Virginia was second (+1 GD), Seton Hall was third (0 GD) and George Mason was fourth (-3 GD). Georgia’s Carrie Patterson was named tournament MVP. Cavaliers Becky Sauerbrunn (St. Louis, Mo.), Christina de Vries (Westlake Village, Calif.) and Kara Frederick (Woodbridge, Va.) were named to the All-Tournament team.
Virginia will return to action on Friday, September 15 as they host Vermont. Game time is 5 p.m. The match will be followed by the men’s soccer game against Boston College.
