Golfweek College Preview Golf World College Preview
Charlottesville, VA — The Virginia women’s golf team, which begins its fourth season of play his week, has been tabbed as one of the nation’s top programs by both GolfWorld and Golfweek in those publication’s preseason polls.
With its first senior class dominating the roster, the Cavaliers are ranked No. 9 by Golfweek and No. 12 in the Golf World standings. Last season UVa placed second in the ACC behind eventual NCAA Champion Duke. The Cavaliers came within a single shot of making their second consecutive trip to the NCAA Championships, losing to Alabama in a one-hole playoff at the NCAA East Regional for the final berth to the national championships.
Senior Leah Wigger is ranked as the No. 6 player in Golf World’s preseason rankings for the top individual players. She was listed as a second-team preseason All-American by Golfweek. Cavalier sophomore Jennie Arseneault was also cited by Golf World as one of the nation’s top 50 players.
Last season Wigger recorded 10 top-10 finishes in 11 tournaments while leading UVa with a 73.26 stroke average. Wigger was UVa’s top finisher in eight tournaments, recorded her second straight top-10 finish at the NCAAs (ninth in 2006) and became the program’s first All-American. Arseneault, who did not enroll at Virginia until January, was second on the team with a 75.50 stroke average.
