CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia women’s soccer team concluded its three-game homestand Friday night with a 6-0 victory over Vermont in front of a season-high crowd of 1,222 at Klockner Stadium. Sarah Curtis (Yellow Springs, Ohio) and Jess Rostedt (Kent, Ohio) each had two goals for Virginia, who improves to 5-2-0 on the season.

“I am very pleased with the result tonight,” head coach Steve Swanson said. “It was good to get all of our players a lot of good minutes. I was especially pleased with the way that we finished our chances tonight.”

The Cavaliers struck first in the 12th minute of play. Rostedt collected a ball in the corner, dribbled along the end line before leaving the ball off to Curtis who one-timed a shot from 10 yards out into the net. A little over three minutes later, Rostedt would make the score 2-0 as she dribbled all the way down the flank, cut inside the box, drew the Catamount keeper out and slotted the ball past her. Kristen Weiss (Brecksville, Ohio) added one more Cavalier goal before the half, when she one-timed a loose ball in the box into the net for her first goal of the season.

In the second half, Virginia added to its lead in the 61st minute. Amanda Stewart (West Chester, Pa.) sent a cross through the box that found Rostedt, who one-timed a shot into the side of net.

In the 79th minute, the Cavaliers went up a player after Vermont keeper Eliza Bradley received her second yellow card for a foul that prevented a breakaway scoring chance and was sent off. Virginia used the extra-player advantage to score twice more in the final ten minutes. Sarah Senty (Arlington, Va.) notched her first career goal in the 85th minute and Curtis tallied her second of the night in the 87th minute.

“I still didn’t think we were as sharp as we need to be for our upcoming games,” Swanson said. “We have a tough game Sunday at a top ten opponent in West Virginia before opening the ACC season next week. I think as we get more familiar with each other as a team, that sharpness will come.”

The Cavaliers outshot the Catamounts (1-3-1) 19-4 in the contest, and had a 7-0 corner kick edge. In goal, Christina de Vries (Westlake Village, Calif.) and Celeste Miles (Garland, Texas) made one save each in a half of action. Bradley made four saves for Vermont.

Virginia will conclude its non-conference schedule on Sunday when the Cavaliers visit No. 6 West Virginia. The Cavaliers return home on September 21 to open ACC play by hosting Wake Forest.
