Franklin, TN – The ninth-ranked Virginia women’s golf team shot 5-over 293 to finish the first round of Vanderbilt’s Mason Rudolph Championship in sixth place in the 15-team field. Third-ranked Georgia took the early lead at 8-under 280 followed by top-ranked Duke at 283. The Blue Devils are the defending tournament champion and reigning NCAA champs.

The Cavaliers were led by senior Leah Wigger, who carded four birdies and four bogies to shoot even-par 72 on the Ironhorse Course at the Legends Club. Sophomore Jennie Arseneault overcame a slow start to post UVa’s second best score at 1-over 73 to land in 20th place. Arseneault opened her round with a bogie on the first hole and a double bogie on the second, but then posted three straight birdies to get back to even. Three more bogies on her back nine had at plus-three through 15 holes before she posted back-to-back birdies on her final two holes.

Lauren Mielbrecht and Rachel Smith both carded 2-over scores of 74 to tie for 29th to round out UVa’s scoring. Smith lead the UVa golfers with six birdies during her round, but a double bogie on No. 18 cost her a shot at shooting par during the first round. Carly Truitt shot 88 and stands 70th.
