CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia women’s soccer team opened up their Atlantic Coast Conference season Thursday night by downing Wake Forest 2-1 at Klockner Stadium. Kristen Weiss (Brecksville, Ohio) and Jess Rostedt (Kent, Ohio) scored for the Cavaliers, who improve to 6-2-1 on the season (1-0-0 ACC).
“We always have tough games with Wake,” head coach Steve Swanson said. “We respect their program and their players a lot. When you play in this league, you need to savor every victory.”
The Cavaliers controlled the first half, outshooting the Demon Deacons 8-2. Weiss got the Cavaliers on the board in the 26th minute as she blasted a ball to the far post after a give-and-go with Sarah Curtis (Yellow Springs, Ohio). Weiss had two more quality chances later in the half, but was denied by saves from Laura Morse.
“I thought we did a great job in the first half,” Swanson said. “It really should have been two or three nothing at halftime. If I were them, I would have felt great about being only down 1-0 at the half.”
The Demon Deacons (8-2-0, 0-1-0 ACC) came out strong to start the second half, creating several scoring opportunities. Wake Forest took advantage of one of those chances in the 68th minute as Sarah Winslow scored to tie the game at 1-1. Virginia would regroup and would retake the lead five minutes later. Jen Redmond (Morristown, N.J.) sent a long ball over the top of the Wake defense that found Rostedt in stride. Rostedt was off on a breakaway and scored what would be the game-winning goal.
The Cavaliers outshot Wake Forest 12-11 in the game, though the Deacons had a 7-2 corner kick advantage. Christina de Vries (Westlake Village, Calif.) made four saves for the Cavaliers, while Morse made three for Wake Forest.
“This is what ACC soccer is all about,” Swanson said. “We are going to have these types of battles in every game the rest of the year. It is the good teams that fight and work hard that can persevere through the schedule.”
Virginia will return to action on Sunday as it hosts Duke. The Blue Devils are coming off a 3-1 win at Virginia Tech Thursday in their conference opener. Game time Sunday at Klockner Stadium is 2 p.m.
