CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia volleyball team opens the home portion of its Atlantic Coast Conference schedule this weekend at Memorial Gym. The Cavaliers, who are 3-0 at home, host North Carolina Friday (Sept. 22) at 7:00 p.m. and NC State on Saturday (Sept. 23) at 5:00 p.m. Admission is free of charge.
UVa stands at 7-3 overall and 0-1 in the ACC. The Cavaliers dropped their ACC opener 3-0 to Virginia Tech in Blacksburg on Sept. 15. The Tar Heels stand at 3-7 and 1-0 in the conference prior to their match at Virginia Tech Thursday evening (Sept. 21). NC State is 2-8 overall and 0-1 in the ACC. The Wolfpack play at Virginia Tech Friday before heading the Charlottesville for Saturday’s match. North Carolina and NC State opened ACC play against one another with the Tar Heels prevailing 3-0 (30-22, 30-27, 30-15) on Sept. 15 in Chapel Hill.
North Carolina has won its last two matches after dropping seven of its first eight. The Cavaliers trail UNC in the all-time series 31-10. The Tar Heels have won the last three meetings in the series. In the last matchup between the two teams, North Carolina overcame a 2-0 deficit to post a 3-2 (28-30, 24-30, 30-28, 30-28, 15-11) victory at Mem Gym on Oct. 28, 2005. UVa lost to North Carolina 3-0 in the first meeting of the 2005 season in Chapel Hill (Sept. 24).
The Wolfpack enter this weekend having lost it last three matches after beginning the season with four straight losses. The Cavaliers lead the all-time series against NC State 27-19 and Virginia has won 21 consecutive matches over the Wolfpack dating back to the 1996 season. Last season, UVa posted a 3-0 win in Raleigh (Sept. 23) and a 3-0 victory at home (Oct. 29) over NC State.
