CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia women’s soccer team improved to 2-0-0 in the ACC with a 1-0 win over Duke Sunday at Klockner Stadium. The Cavaliers got a 79th minute goal from Jess Rostedt (Kent, Ohio) to lift them over the Blue Devils and improve to 7-2-1 overall this season.
“We are very happy with the result,” head coach Steve Swanson said. “We knew this game was going to be a grinder. We had to stay in it and take advantage of our chances, and that is what we did.”
The teams played a scoreless first half of play with the Cavaliers outshooting the Blue Devils (5-4-1, 1-1-0 ACC) 6-2 before the break. Early in the second half, rain began to fall, the teams played through the precipitation, which was heavy at times. As the rain increased, so did the Cavalier’s pressure on the Duke defense. Virginia finally broke through in the 79th minute as Kelly Quinn (Dublin, Ohio) and Jen Redmond (Morristown, N.J.) had a give-and-go passing sequence that led to Redmond finding Rostedt on the wing. Rostedt then cut into the penalty area, before driving a shot into the far side of the net.
“That was a great sequence between Kelly and Jen to set up Jess,” Swanson said. “They were able to find her on the flank where she was isolated on a defender. Give Jess credit, she took advantage of the chance and buried it for the goal.”
The Cavaliers outshot Duke 11-2 in the game and had a 4-2 corner kick advantage. Christina de Vries (Westlake Village, Calif.) made didn’t need to make a save to post her fourth shutout of the season. Allison Lipsher made six saves in net for Duke.
“We are happy to get two results this week to open the conference,” Swanson said. “We are excited to go down to Florida State this week, which should be a great opportunity to see where we are as a team at this point in the season. It is always a tough environment down there and we know they will be ready for us.”
Virginia will embark on its first ACC road trip next weekend, visiting Florida State and Miami. The Seminoles, ranked No. 1 this week, are 1-1-0 in ACC play after a loss at No. 4 North Carolina on Thursday and a win over NC State on Sunday.
