The Virginia field hockey team outcornered the Boston University Terriers and got on the board first, but BU scored the final two goals of the game and fell to the Terriers 2-1 in Cambridge today. Inge Kaars Sijpesteijn scored on a direct shot on a short corner, one of six for Virginia (7-3), to take the early lead. The Virginia defense held Boston University to only four corners, but the Terriers scored on their fourth to take their first lead of the game and held on for the win.
Virginia won the battle of the short corners (3-2) and shots (5-4) in the first half, but neither team was able to find the boards. A defensive save by Erin Hayes on BU’s first corner of the game kept the Terriers off the scoreboard, and the teams entered the break tied at 0-0.
In the second half the Cavaliers drew the first three corners of the period, including one as Kaars Sijpesteijn hit in a free hit from just outside the D, and Fenna Breitbarth was fouled on the reception to draw the short corner. On the play, the injection by Biffy Cornelison and the trap by Abby Taylor set up the shot for Kaars Sijpesteijn, who scored at 46:58 to give UVa the 1-0 lead.
Boston University almost equalized four minutes later as they drew a short corner, but the direct strike was saved off the line again by Hayes. As BU continued with possession, a loose ball in the circle was picked up by Pam Speuhler, who slotted a loose ball in the cage into the far corner, tying the game at 1-1.
The Terriers drew their second corner of the half and on the play, the option left was tipped into the cage by Sarah Hudak, who scored in the 60th minute to give BU the lead they would not relinquish.
Hayes’ two defensive saves give her 11 for her career, and she now ranks third all-time at Virginia.
With the loss, the Cavaliers fall to 7-3 overall. They return to action on Wednesday as they travel to Richmond to face the Spiders.
