CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – – Sophomore forward Yannick Reyering headed in a cross from Chris Tierney 33 seconds into the second overtime as No. 5 Virginia defeated American, 2-1, Wednesday night at Klockner Stadium. Reyering scored his sixth goal of the season to help the Cavaliers (9-1-0) remain undefeated at home.
“In games like this when you don’t put your chances away and don’t get that second goal, that’s what happens. There;s nobody on our schedule that’s not good enough if we don’t come out fully focused that can’t cause us problems.
Tierney received a nicely played ball on the left side. He sent a pass into the box that found the head of Reyering from 12 yards out at the 100:33 mark.
Both teams each had one opportunity in the first overtime. UVa goalkeeper Ryan Burke tipped a shot from American’s Larry Mark wide to save a goal in the 96th minute. Virginia had a chance in the 99th minute when Jeremy Barlow had a shot saved by American’s Chris Sedlak.
Virginia and American played to a scoreless tie in the second half. The Cavaliers had a good chance in the 60th minute when Nico Colaluca found Reyering on a breakaway all alone. Reyering tried to dribble around Sedlak, who came up. Sedlak intercepted the ball before Reyering could get a shot off to keep the game knotted, 1-1. Reyering had another chance seven minutes but Sedlak recorded another save for the Eagles.
Burke made two saves late to keep the Eagles off the board in the second period. His final one came on a shot from Mark in the 81st minute to force a corner kick.
American’s lone goal came on a Virginia mistake in the 26th minute. A UVa defender tried to clear a ball, but his kick resulted into an own goal giving American an early 1-0 lead.
Virginia answered five minutes when Adam Cristman scored his second goal of the season off a free kick. Jonathan Villanueva and Colaluca each assisted on the play.
The Cavaliers out-shot American, 25-10, in the game. American held a 6-4 advantage on corner kicks. Sedlak finished with 10 saves for the Eagles while Burke tallied six saves.
UVa returns to Atlantic Coast Conference action Saturday night when No. 5 Virginia hosts No. 2 Clemson (8-0-1). The Cavaliers will unveil HooVision at Klockner Stadium on its newly installed video scoreboard. UVa also looks to set this season’s ACC single game attendance record.
