TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Virginia women’s soccer team remained unbeaten in the ACC this season with a scoreless draw at No. 3 Florida State Thursday night at the Seminole Soccer Complex. The tie brings the Cavaliers’ record to 7-2-2 on the season, 2-0-1 in the conference, while the Seminoles move to 7-1-1 overall, 1-1-1 in the ACC.

“I think a draw was a fair result tonight,” head coach Steve Swanson said. “I felt both teams had some decent chances, but the play was pretty much between the 18s all night long.”

The two teams played back and forth in the midfield with neither team amounting significant chances for the opening 30 minutes of the game. Florida State got the game’s first chance in the 32nd minute as India Trotter had a breakaway, but Christina de Vries (Westlake Village, Calif.) made a save to keep the game scoreless. Florida State added several more shots before the break, but the game remained scoreless at the half.

The Cavaliers had several quality scoring chances in the second half. In the 81st minute Sarah Curtis (Yellow Springs, Ohio) sent a shot just wide. Then in the 90th minute, Jess Rostedt (Kent, Ohio) had a breakaway shot that was saved by Ali Mims. Regulation ended with the game still scoreless.

Virginia had a chance in the first minute of overtime as Kara Frederick (Woodbridge, Va.) lifted a looping shot that hit off the crossbar. Both teams had several other chances in the overtime period, but neither could break through.

Overall, Florida State outshot Virginia 15-13 in the contest, while the Cavaliers had the edge in corner kicks, 3-2. Both de Vries and Mims made four saves in each respective net to record the shutouts. The shutout was de Vries’ fifth of the season, and the 28th of her career.

“We have a big game for us coming up on Sunday at Miami,” said Swanson. “We need to pick up a result against an ACC on the road.”

The Cavaliers conclude their two-game road trip to Florida on Sunday as they visit Miami. It will be Virginia’s first ever trip to Coral Gables. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
