No. 5 Virginia hosts No. 2 Clemson for its second home Atlantic Coast Conference match Saturday at 7 p.m. at Klöckner Stadium. Virginia will unveil HooVision on its new video scoreboard. Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for kids, senior citizens, faculty and staff (with a vaild UVa ID).
ABOUT THE VIRGINIA CAVALIERS
Virginia (9-1-0, 2-1-0 ACC) remained undefeated at home by defeating American, 2-1, in double overtime Wednesday night. Yannick Reyering headed in a cross from Chris Tierney 33 seconds into the second overtime for the game-winning goal. Adam Cristman scored the Cavaliers first goal in the 26th minute. Virginia is now a perfect 8-0 at home this season having played four straight games in overtime at Klöckner Stadium. Virginia is led by sophomore forward Yannick Reyering who has 16 points which includes six goals and four assists. Colaluca now ranks second on the team with 10 points including a season-high four goals and two assists. Adam Cristman has scored two goals and added three assists for seven points. Jeremy Barlow has six points (two goals, two assists) while senior midfielder Ian Holder has scored two goals for Virginia. UVa has outscored opponents, 17-8, and out-shot them, 157-96. The Cavs are averaging 15.7 shots per game.
ABOUT THE CLEMSON TIGERS
Clemson enters the weekend match-up 8-0-1 on the season and 2-0-1 in ACC play. The Tigers are ranked No. 2 in four polls: Soccer America, NSCAA, College Soccer News and Soccer Times. Clemson took the mid-week after drawing to a scoreless tie with NC State last Sunday. The Tigers are led in scoring by Dane Richards with seven goals and six assists for 20 points. Frederico Moojen has seven goals and one assist for 15 points.
THE VIRGINIA-CLEMSON SERIES
This will be the 47th meeting between Clemson and Virginia on the soccer field. The Cavaliers lead the overall series 22-19-5. In the last seven meetings, the series is tied 3-3-1. Last year the two teams split. Virginia won the regular season meeting 1-0 and the Tigers won at the ACC Tournament over the Cavaliers 4-1.
LAST TIME AGAINST THE CLEMSON TIGERS
Forward Yannick Reyering found the back of the net off an assist from Will Hall in the 104th minute as No. 6 Virginia held off Clemson, 1-0, in double overtime at Riggs Field in the first meeting last season. The Cavaliers (8-1-2, 4-0-0 ACC) remained unbeaten in the conference while Clemson fell to 5-4-1 and 0-4-0 in ACC. or the game, Clemson outshot UVA 15-11, with the only shot in overtime for the Cavaliers coming on Reyering’s goal. Clemson held a 7-1 advantage on corner kicks. In the second meeting, No. 7 seed Clemson scored four second-half goals as the Tigers eliminated No. 2 seed Virginia, 4-1, in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Soccer Tournament at SAS Soccer Complex last season. Clemson out-shot Virginia, 12-5, but the Cavaliers held a 6-5 advantage on corner kicks. Reyering scored his 12th goal of the season to bring Virginia within 2-1. He blasted a direct free kick from 30 yards that Clemson goalkeeper Phil Marfuggi couldn’t hang on to in the 56th minute.
CAVALIERS IN THE POLLS
Virginia is No. 5 in College Soccer News, the National Soccer Coaches of America (NSCAA) and Soccer Times polls. The Cavaliers are No. 6 in Soccer America.
DEFENSE KEY IN CAVS’ STARTThe addition of red-shirt freshman Bakary Soumare and junior Matt Williams has made an immediate impact for the Cavaliers to go along with returning starters Matt Poole, Zola Short and Ryan Burke. Virginia has four shutouts in its first 10 games. The Cavaliers have allowed eight goals this season. Burke has played 739 minutes in goal and tallied 29 saves while sporting a 0.85 goals allowed average. Michael Giallombardo has played 182 minutes in goal and registered two wins for the Cavaliers.
ADAMANT ADAM
After scoring one point in the first seven games , senior forward Adam Cristman has been in a groove the last three games. Cristman has back-to-back goals in games against North Carolina and American. He also an assist against West Virginia in producing six points in the last three games. He now has 26 career goals and 13 career assists for 65 points.
COLALUCA’S OFFENSIVE IN 2006
Junior midfielder Nico Colaluca is the second leading scorer for the Cavaliers already in 2006. Colaluca already has matched his career total in goals. He had four career goals and six career assists for 14 career points heading into this season. He already has four goals and two assists for 10 points through 10 games this season.
BURKE CHASING RECORDS
Senior goalkeeper Ryan Burke continues to move up the all-time career charts. Burke is second all-time in career shutouts (23), games played (68) and minutes played in goal (6,256). He ranks third in saves (212), eighth in GAA (1.05) and ninth in saves percentage (.731).
BIG CROWDS
As has been the theme for ACC Men’s soccer in 2006, Virginia is among the top in the league in drawing big crowds. Through eight home games, the Cavaliers have topped the 3,000 mark twice: 3,219 against Davidson and 3,839 against Boston College. Virginia is averaging 2,093 fans this season at Klockner Stadium. The Cavaliers are looking to top the 2006 ACC single game season record which stands at 7,012. UVa has home ACC games remaining against Clemson (Sept. 30), Maryland (Oct. 11) and Wake Forest (Oct. 27).
HOME THRILLERS
Virginia has played four straight home overtime games this season. UVa started the streak with a 2-1 OT win over Saint Francis followed by a 3-2 win over Boston College and 2-1 win over No. 8 West Virginia. The Cavaliers defeated American in their last home game. Four consecutive overtimes is a record for men’s program. The 1990 holds the record for the most overtime games in a season at eight games. The 1990 also had played three straight home OT games until the 2006 season registered its fourth consecutive against American.
HooVision HITS KLOCKNER
The Cavaliers will unveil HooVision against Clemson on its newly installed video scoreboard at Klöckner Stadium Saturday night. The new scoreboard is the first of its kind to be used for men’s soccer in the ACC. The video display itself is 22 feet wide and 12 feet high. Live action and video replays will be shown on the board in creating new atmosphere for college soccer.
