Chapel Hill, NC – The ninth-ranked Virginia women’s golf team turned in one of the best performances in the program’s four-year history with a second-place finish at North Carolina’s Lady Tar Heel Invitational played at UNC’s Finley Golf Course. Behind the solid play of senior Leah Wigger and sophomore Jennie Arseneault, the Cavaliers shot 6-over 294 during the final round to finish five shots behind first place Vanderbilt. The Lady Commodores, ranked 18th won the event with a 54-hole total of 893.

Virginia finished one shot ahead of second-ranked Duke, the reigning NCAA Champion. The Blue Devils dropped back in the standings after the second round concluded when it was determined Alison Whitaker had signed an incorrect scorecard and was disqualified. That action changed Duke’s second-round score by nine shots from 295 to 304.

Wigger shot 2-under 70 Sunday, her low round for the season, to finish fourth overall at 3-over 219. Wigger started the tournament with a 77 during Friday’s rainy, windy first round, but rebounded for a 72 Saturday. Her finish marks the 19th time during her career she has finished in the top-10 at a tournament.

Arseneault notched her second straight top-10 finish by placing fifth at 220. She had rounds of 75, 72 and 73. Kristen Simpson and Rachel Smith tied for 49th at 234 while Whitney Neuhauser, playing in her first collegiate tournament, was 56th at 236. Smith and Neuhauser rounded out UVa’s final round scoring with a 75 and 76, respectively.

Texas A&M’s Ashley Knoll and Florida State’s Caroline Westrup shared medalist honors at 2-under 214. Both players shot 69 during the final round.

Virginia’s second-place finish will move the Cavaliers up in the Golfweek standings. In addition to placing above Duke, the Wahoos also finished higher than fifth-ranked Auburn, eight-ranked Wake Forest and six other teams ranked in the latest top-25 poll.

The Cavaliers are out of action until Oct. 27-29 when they play at The Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, N.C.
