CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – – Junior infielder Patrick Wingfield hit an RBI groundout to score Brandon Guyer in the bottom of the sixth as Orange defeated Blue, 1-0, Friday night in the second game of the Orange-Blue series to even the series at Davenport Field. Casey Lambert earned the win in relief as he tossed two scoreless innings and struck out two batters.
“I was just glad to see our guys competing hard,” UVa head coach Brian O’Connor said. “They’re battling out there every inning. We made a couple of mistakes tonight, but that’s why we have fall ball to work on stuff like that. Tomorrow’s game is the rubber match, so it’s going to be a great way to wrap up this series. We should have a good crowd. Hopefully, our fans will come before a big football game.”
Guyer went 2-for-2 with the only run scored in the game. Freshman infielder Tyler Cannon finished 2-for-3 while Wingfield ended the game 1-for-3 with an RBI for Orange. Brandon Marsh led Blue going 2-for-3. Sean Doolittle added one hit for Blue.
Freshman Matt Packer started for Orange on the mound and tossed five scoreless innings. He struck out two and allowed two hits. Jacob Thompson started for Blue and scattered five hits in five shutout innings. He recorded five strikeouts. Jake Rule pitched the final inning, surrendering the lone run.
Guyer led off the bottom of the sixth with a single up the middle. He later stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. After John Scaglione snagged a potential base hit for Jeremy Farrell and threw him out, Wingfield hit a ball to the shortstop, which allowed Guyer to score from third.
Both teams squandered scoring opportunities in the game. In the bottom of the fourth, Wingfield reached on an infield single. Cannon’s single through the right side put runners on with no outs. Thompson struck out Beau Seabury looking and Ryan Hudson’s snap-throw down to first picked off Cannon. Thompson got Packer to fly out to right field to end the inning.
Blue had its chance in the top of the sixth. With one out, Marsh singled up the middle. Lambert struck out Doolittle swinging before Marsh was caught in a rundown to end Blue’s half of the inning.
The rubber match of the series is Saturday at 11 a.m. Admission is free to the public. The Blue Team is coached by assistant coach Brian Anderson. Assistant coach Kevin McMullan is the coach of the Orange Team.
