COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Virginia women’s soccer team suffered its second consecutive loss, falling to Maryland 2-0 Sunday night at Ludwig Field. The Cavaliers, who played with ten players for 80 minutes, could not hold back the Terrapins, and dropped their record to 9-6-2 (4-4-1 ACC), while Maryland improves to 5-8-4 (1-5-3).
“Of course, this is another disappointing result for us,” head coach Steve Swanson said. “I thought that we kept fighting, despite being down a player . We still created a few chances shorthanded, but we couldn’t convert them.”
The Terrapins went up a player in the 11th minute as Alli Fries (Dublin, Ohio) was sent off for a foul on a Maryland player who had gotten behind the Cavalier defense. The Terrapins took advantage of the extra player in the 17th minute, as Emily Maynard received a pass from Sarah Sample, cut into the box and fired a shot into the net for the Terps’ first goal in nearly a month. Late in the first half, the Cavaliers nearly tied the game as Nikki Lieb’s (Villanova, Pa.) header off a corner kick from Jen Redmond (Morristown, N.J.) went off the crossbar. The game went to intermission with the Terrapins leading 1-0.
In the second half, the Cavaliers nearly equalized again in the 58th minute as a loose ball in the box off a free kick went to Nikki Krzysik (Clifton, N.J.), who sent her shot just high. Maryland extended the lead to 2-0 in the 67th minute as Maynard hit a cross to Lauren Gamble, who one-timed a ball into the net.
Maryland outshot Virginia 17-16 in the contest, but the Cavaliers had a 4-3 corner kick edge. Christina de Vries (Westlake Village, Calif.) made three save for Virginia, while Nikki Resnick made six for Maryland.
“If we compete like we did tonight, we will be fine the rest of the way,” Swanson said. “There is still a lot of soccer to be played this season.”
Virginia will conclude the regular season on Saturday, as they visit NC State. Game time in Raleigh is 2 p.m.
