CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – – Wake Forest’s Cody Arnoux scored the game-winner in the 77th minute to lift the No. 3 Demon Deacons to a 2-1 victory over No. 2 Virginia Friday night at Klockner Stadium in the Atlantic Coast Conference regular season finale for both teams. Nico Colaluca scored his sixth goal of the season for the Cavaliers who fell to 13-3-0 and 5-3-0 in the ACC.

Virginia out-shot Wake Forest, 22-11, in the match and held a 10-4 advantage on corner kicks. Senior goalkeeper Ryan Burke recorded a season-high seven saves for the Cavaliers.

Virginia trailed 2-1 with 13 minutes left. The Cavaliers had two final chances in the last three minutes. Adam Cristman headed a Colaluca corner kick that Wake Forest goalkeeper Brian Edwards saved.

The Cavaliers looked to have struck with the equalizer with 12 seconds remaining. Jeremy Barlow played a ball into the box near the end line. Colaluca headed the ball back into the box where freshman Ross LaBauex finished the goal, but Barlow’s pass was ruled out of bounds nullifying the goal.

Arnoux put the Demon Deacons ahead, 2-1, when he rifled a shot from 15 yards out off a cross from Steven Curfman.

Colaluca gave Virginia a 1-0 lead in the 50th minute. Jonathan Villanueva’s corner kick was dropped by Edwards and Colaluca knocked in the rebound.

Wake Forest answered in the 51st minute when Pat Phelan’s shot from 25 yards was saved by Burke, but Julian Valentin was there to knock in that rebound tying the game, 1-1.

Virginia controlled possession of the ball in the first half as the Cavaliers out-shot Wake Forest, 11-4. The Cavaliers took five shots on goal in the first 10 minutes. Yannick Reyering had a shot frame saved off the line by Wake Forest’s Michael Lahoud in the 10th minute.

Edwards finished with eight saves for the Demon Deacons.

Virginia will next be in action Wed. Nov. 1 when the Cavaliers take part in the 2006 ACC Tournament at the Germantown Soccerplex in Germantown, Md. Seeding and match-ups for the tournament will be announced later this weekend.
