Virginia Swimming and Diving Concludes Season Opening Quad Meet

CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia men’s and women’s swimming teams concluded their first meet of the season Saturday at the Aquatic and Fitness Center. The quad meet with Clemson, Penn State, and Virginia Tech ended with the Cavalier men going 3-0 and the Cavalier women going 2-1.
The Virginia men defeated ACC rivals Clemson 202-149, and Virginia Tech 206.5-146.5. The Cavaliers also defeated Penn State 229-124.
The Virginia women recorded conference wins over Clemson 226-127 and Virginia Tech 217-136. The Cavaliers fell to Penn State 192-161.
The Cavalier men’s team won five of the day’s nine events. Virginia opened the meet by winning the 200 Medley Relay. The team of Bryan Stahl (Woodlands, Texas), Vanja Rogulj (Zagreb, Croatia), Lee Robertson (Waynesboro, Va.), and Greg Imboden (Chattanooga, Tenn.) won in a time of 1:32.25. Virginia finished first and second in the 1000 Free, as John Millen (Lilburn, Ga.) won in 9:19.30 and Darren Ankokso (East Brunswick, N.J.) placed second in 9:24.79. The Cavaliers also placed first and second in the 200 breaststroke, with Ryan Hurley (Potomac, Md.) winning in 2:01.57 and Rogulj finishing in 2:03:33. In the 200 Free, the Cavaliers went one-two with Millen recording his second win of the day in a time of 1:39.31 and Stefan Hirniak (Highland Park, Md.) placing second in 1:40.39. Robertson added a third place finish in the 100 Butterfly with a time of 50.87. Pat Mellors (Pittsburgh, Pa.) won the 400 I.M. in a time of 3:59.45, while Hurley finished third in a time of 4:02.80.
The Cavalier women’s team won two events on the day. Stephanie Glover (Raleigh, N.C.) won the 100 Butterfly in a time of 56.17. Virginia also won the 400 Free Relay, as the team of Katy Bland (Raleigh, N.C.), Glover, Amber Bialas (Virginia Beach, Va.), and Jess Lewis (Allentown, Pa.) won in 3:27.17. In the 1000 Free, Jenn Narum (Pleasanton, Calif.) and Rory Schmidt (Phoenix, Ariz.) finished second and third, with times of 10:09.18 and 10:10.44 respectively. Mei Christensen (Reston, Va.) placed second in the 100 backstroke in a time of 57.48. Colleen Law (Bethesda, Md.) finished third in the 200 Free with a time of 1:54.78. Erin Corgan (Marietta, Ga.) swam the 400 I.M. in 4:26.19 to finish third.
The Cavaliers will return to action on Saturday, November 4 as they host Georgia Tech. The meet is slated for a 1 p.m. start at the Aquatic and Fitness Center.
