NBA Top 100 Camp Coming To Virginia In 2007

CHARLOTTESVILLE – The NBA Top 100 Camp has a home at the University of Virginia for the next four years. The camp will be held at Virginia beginning in June of 2007.
The Top 100 High School Basketball Camp was created 11 years ago by the NBA Players Association to assist the Top 100 high school student-athletes in the development of their individual and life skills, both on and off the court.
“We are excited to host the Top 100 Basketball Camp at the University of Virginia,” UVa Executive Associate Director of Athletics Jon Oliver said. “We will have many former and current NBA stars on Grounds to work with the best young players in the country and the camp also has a community service component to it. The opportunity to work with the NBPA to help make this a reality has been a privilege and we look forward to exposing the campers and their families to the John Paul Jones Arena and all that the community of Charlottesville has to offer.”
Each summer, 25 current and former NBA stars work or visit the camp to advise all campers on how they can make their basketball goals a reality by teaching NBA moves and training techniques. The Top 100 Camp also utilizes experts in a variety of fields to help lay a solid foundation for success both on and off the court.
In addition to on court education, presentations and mentoring, the Top 100 Camp has designed a special program to help parents and guardians in assisting a young man’s career. Daily seminars focus on recruiting issues, peer pressure, nutrition, S.A.T. preparation, NCAA rules, setting goals and stress management.
“For the past 11 years, the Players Association has taken great pride in developing both a basketball and educational curriculum that makes the Top 100 Camp cutting edge and unique,” said NBPA Executive Director Billy Hunter. “Other camps have attempted to duplicate different aspects of our program, but we remain the standard for helping top players develop life skills as well as athletic skills. The opportunity to stage next year’s camp at the University of Virginia’s beautiful state-of-the-art facility should enhance our camp experience even further. We look forward to a productive relationship with Virginia.”
Among the individuals who have participated in Top 100 Camps as campers are Shane Battier, Kobe Bryant, Caron Butler, Richard Jefferson and Lamar Odom.
The camp will be held at Virginia through the summer of 2010. There is an option for a fifth year.
