CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia women’s soccer team will travel to Winston-Salem, N.C. to open play in the NCAA Tournament this weekend. The Cavaliers (10-7-2) will play West Virginia (14-3-3) in a first round game Friday at 5 p.m. at Spry Stadium on the campus of Wake Forest.
The game will be a rematch of a regular season game this season. In that contest, the Cavaliers and Mountaineers played to a 1-1 draw on September 17 in Morgantown. It will also be the second all-time NCAA Tournament meeting between the schools. In 2002, Virginia defeated West Virginia 1-0 in a second round game in Morgantown.
“We are excited for the opportunity that we have in the NCAA Tournament,” Virginia head coach Steve Swanson said. “We know we have a tough first round game against West Virginia, a team that we have had a some terrific battles with over the past few years. We anticipate that this game will be no different.”
In the other first round game in Winston-Salem, the host Demon Deacons (15-5-1) will play Old Dominion (17-4-1). The winners of Friday’s games will meet Sunday at 1 p.m. in the second round.
