CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia women’s basketball team has received a National Letter of Intent from Kelly Hartig (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) during the early signing period, head coach Debbie Ryan announced on Thursday.
A 6-4 power forward from ThunderRidge H.S., Hartig averaged 12.0 points and 6.0 rebounds last season for her AAU team- the Boulder Rockies- where she earned division MVP honors. The Street & Smith’s Honorable Mention All-American also helped ThunderRidge High School to the Class 5A state semifinals in 2005-06.
Hartig is ranked No. 7 at power forward by Collegiate Girls Basketball Report and 34th overall. Ranked nationally at No. 10 at power forward by All-Star Girls Report, Hartig is also ranked as the No. 48 player overall. The5-star recruit is ranked 23rd nationally by Hoopgurlz.com.
Hartig is the younger sister of Virginia freshman forward Jayna Hartig. The sisters have three former teammates playing Division I basketball- Abby and Emily Waner at Duke, and Emily Fox at Minnesota.
“Kelly is going to give us much needed size and strength inside,” Ryan said. “She is a very aggressive post player, and we’re really looking forward to her coming in and joining her sister and strengthening our post position.”
The Cavaliers travel to Rhode Island for the season opener on Friday, Nov. 10. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. at the Ryan Center. WINA Radio (1070 AM) will broadcast the game live. Virginia returns to Charlottesville for its first-ever game at John Paul Jones Arena against Old Dominion on Sunday, Nov. 12 at 1:30 p.m.
