CHARLOTTESVILLE – Play concluded Sunday at the most recent UVa Men’s Open, held at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. The tournament, a USTA sanctioned prize money event, featured several former ATP players, as well as nationally ranked college and junior players.
In the singles final No. 7 seed Marko Miklo (Bratislava, Slovakia) defeated teammate and No. 4 seed Treat Huey 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. The three-hour long final featured many exciting exchanges which kept the crowd fascinated throughout the match.
Miklo advanced to the finals with two upset wins. In the quarterfinals he defeated No. 2 seed Kyle Rudman 3-6, 7-6, 6-4. In the semifinals Miklo registered another upset defeating No. 5 seed Houston Barrick 6-4, 6-2. Barrick, currently the No. 1 ranked junior in the United States pulled off his own upset in the quarterfinals defeating No. 4 seed, recent UVa alumnus Rylan Rizza 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Huey reached the finals by outlasting teammate Lee Singer (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) in the quarterfinals in another 3-hour long match 6-7, 6-1, 6-4. He played his best tennis of the tournament in the semifinals where he pulled off the tournament’s biggest upset by defeating No. 1 seed Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) 6-3, 6-1. The match saw Devvarman take a 3-0 lead but Huey would not be denied as he reeled off 12 out of the next 13 games to take the match.
In the doubles finals Huey and Devvarman defeated Barrick and Rizza 8-6 to claim the championship.
