Recap | Box Score

Bucknell Head Coach Brendan Nash:

“We had a pretty intense scouting report on Virginia, and we saw how athletic they were on tape versus Maryland, Wake Forest, and Clemson, but there’s only so much athleticism that you can see on tape. Once we got on the field, it was evident that we were playing a team that was on a whole other level.”

“The first two goals definitely stifled us early. That was our goal from the outset: don’t let them score early on this field with this crowd. The first goal was a save that our goalie normally makes. Both he and our defense have been excellent this season, and they’ve gotten us this far. The second goal was just a defensive mistake. For the rest of the game, they pinned us on our side of the field and dictated the course of the rest of their game with their amazing midfielders and flank play.”

Virginia Head Coach George Gelnovatch:

“Anytime you open up with a win, and in the fashion that we did it, it’s a good thing. It’s important to get some wind in our sails. The turnaround is pretty quick. Three days from now we play California, which will be a pretty good game, so it’s important that we got some wind in our sails.”

“The challenge we put to the team was to score first and to score early, and the team responded. All the starters got about 60 minutes and then we got the guys on the bench some playoff experience. Our leading scorer (Yannick Reyering) didn’t even score tonight. He created some great chances in getting involved, but we had a lot of other guys step up.”
