ATLANTA – Virginia guard Sean Singletary (Philadelphia, Pa.) is one of 50 men’s college basketball players named as preseason candidates for the Naismith Trophy presented by Cingular Wireless. The Atlanta Tipoff Club announced the list of candidates. The Naismith Trophy is presented to the men’s and women’s players of the year.
The Top 50 list was compiled by the Atlanta Tipoff Club’s Board of Selectors, comprised of leading basketball journalists, coaches and administrators from around the country. The board based its preseason criteria on player performances from last season and expectations for the 2006-07 season.
Singletary, a 6-0 junior, is averaging 18.5 points, 7.0 assists and 4.0 rebounds a game in the Cavaliers’ first two games of the 2006-07 season. Last season he averaged 17.7 points, 4.4 rebounds and 4.2 assists a game, and earned first-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors. He is the first Virginia men’s basketball player to earn first-team All-ACC honors since Bryant Stith in 1992.
Singletary is also on the “Watch List” for the Bob Cousy Award and is one of the Top 50 preseason candidates for the 2006-07 Wooden Award All-America Team.
