Balum wins Mat Town Open as Virginia places eight of 11

Virginia Freshmen Kellon Balum won his first collegiate tournament this past weekend after going 4-0 at the Mat Town Open. He improved his season record to 7-1 with his only loss of the season coming to the No. 1 Ryan Lang at the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. Ross Gitomer placed second at 125 after going 3-1, losing a close match in the finals to Lock Haven’s Obie Blanc. Placing third for the Cavaliers was Mike Grogan after going 4-1 at 174 pounds. Brent Jones placed fourth with three pins at 197 and Drew DiPasqaule(149) Beau Fisher(157) Brent Fiorito(165) and Calvin Cardillo(184) all placed sixth at their respective weight class.
Balum (141) defeated Cam Watkins(ODU) by fall at 3:47, majored Mark Armstrong (Lock Haven) 14-4, decisioned Andrew Stella (Buffalo) 5-3 and won in the finals by medical forfeit over 20th ranked Old Dominion’s Ryan Williams to earn his first college tournament title.
UVa returns to action this weeked at the Las Vegas Invitational and Penn State Open.
