CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia women’s basketball rallied to beat Temple, coached by former UVa All-American Dawn Staley, 71-65, at the John Paul Jones Arena on Wednesday.
The Cavaliers improved to 5-2 on the season, while the Owls fell to 3-2 overall.
The teams swapped baskets through the first 10 minutes of action. Temple took a five-point lead, 21-16 with 9:22 on the clock. UVa went on an 8-0 run to go ahead by three, 24-21, led by Sharneé Zoll’s (Marlboro, N.J.) steal and lay-up, followed by a steal by senior Siedah Williams (Cleveland, Ohio) and a lay-up by freshman Paulisha Kellum (Upper Marlboro, Md.). The Owls came back, paced by Kamesha Hairston’s 22 first-half points, to hold a six-point advantage at the break, 39-33.
In the second half, UVa opened with a 13-4 run, led by Zoll’s seven points, to go ahead by three, 46-43 with 16:15 to play. The Cavaliers maintained their lead throughout much of the half, but Temple tied the game, 61-61 with 3:49 to go. Virginia finished the game with a 10-4 run, sparked by freshman Monica Wright’s (Woodbridge, Va.) six points.
Wright finished with a career-high 26 points. Sophomore Lyndra Littles (Washington, D.C.) netted her third consecutive double-double (fifth of the season/10th of career) with 18 points and a career-best 13 rebounds. Zoll finished with 12 points and eight assists.
Hairston also finished with a double-double, tallying 30 points and 12 rebounds. Shenita Landry added 14 points, while Fatima Maddox had 11 points.
Overall, Virginia out-rebounded Temple, 38-36. UVa forced 19 turnovers while committing only 10. Temple shot 44 percent (24-54) from the field, while UVa shot 39 percent (39-74), marking the first time this season that Virginia has won a game when out-shot by an opponent.
Virginia hosts Seton Hall on Saturday, Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. at John Paul Jones Arena.
