CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) -Sean Singletary scored 27 points and Virginia knocked off the rust of a two-week layoff with a 91-69 victory over Hampton on Saturday.

The Cavaliers (6-1) played most of the game without coach Dave Leitao, who was ejected with 4:43 left in the first half after drawing two technical fouls in a span of a few seconds. Assistant Rob Lanier took over after Leitao was banished to the locker room.

The game was the first of four in six days for Virginia, which had not played since Dec. 3 because of final exams. The Pirates (2-8) also had not played in two weeks for the same reason.

Hampton led 13-9 after a Demario Mattox layup five minutes into the game, but five different Cavaliers scored during an 11-0 run to give Virginia a 28-20 lead with 6:55 left. The Pirates could get no closer than six the rest of the way.

Singletary was 14-of-16 from the line. His first miss early in the second half ended his streak of 39 consecutive made free throws, the third longest in school history. He also had three of Virginia’s six 3-pointers.

Ryan Pettinella made all six of his field goals and finished with 14 points for the Cavaliers. Adrian Joseph and Jason Cain scored 12 points each, and Mamadi Diane had 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

Mattox and Mike Freeman led the Pirates with 17 points each. Matthew Pilgrim, making his first appearance of the season after recovering from a broken foot, added 13 points.
