GUAYNABO, Puerto Rico (AP) -Nathan Cranford scored 24 points to lead five players in double figures and Appalachian State defeated Virginia 80-69 Tuesday in the first round of the San Juan Shootout.
Cranford had four 3-pointers to help put Appalachian State (8-3) ahead 41-28 at the break. D.J. Thompson added 17 points for the Mountaineers, who next play Wednesday against Central Florida, a 67-61 winner over Utah.
Appalachian State outshot Virginia from the field, 54.2 percent to 38.9 percent.
J.R. Reynolds led Virginia (6-2) with 20 points, and Adrian Joseph added 16 and Sean Singletary had 14.
