Men's Lacrosse Downs Drexel 15-7

Philadelphia, Pa. – Virginia scored eight unanswered goals in the third quarter to break a 5-all tie and defeat Drexel 15-7 in the season opener for both teams Saturday afternoon. The game is the first lacrosse game played at the newly-renovated Vidas Field on Drexel’s campus.
After a back and forth first half which saw Virginia take a 5-4 lead at the break, Drexel tied the game in the opening minutes of the second half. Greg Dougherty tallied on a feed from Adam Dennis on an extra-man opportunity.
The Cavaliers answered with a man-up goal from Matt Ward at the 11:48 mark. Freshman Danny Glading assisted on Ward’s goal to start the visitors from Virginia on their game-breaking run. Glading notched his second goal of the game and assisted on Jared Little’s goal midway through the quarter as the UVa lead grew to 8-5. Ben Rubeor and Matt Poskay each had two of their three goals during the run.
UVa freshman Matt Pomper opened the game’s scoring at 11:18 of the first period. The Cavalier lead was short lived, however, as Drexel’s Jeff Pfeffer tallied twice in a two-minute span to give Drexel a 2-1 advantage. Virginia closed out the first period with goals by freshmen Garrett Billings and Glading, the first of their careers.
Drexel tied the score with a man-up goal from freshman Adam Dennis at 9:33 of the second period, but Virginia answered with a goal just a little more than two minutes later when Billings scored his second goal of the game. Drexel’s Chris O’Connor knotted the game at four with a tally less than a minute and a half later. Rubeor scored the first of his three goals with just 2:29 remaining in the half to secure a 5-4 lead for Virginia as both teams headed for the locker rooms.
Rubeor and Poskay led the way for Virginia with three goals apiece, while Ward tallied once and tied his career high with four assists. Glading scored twice and had two assists in his debut, while Billings scored a pair and had an assist in his first collegiate appearance. Jeff Pfeffer and Greg Dougherty each found the net twice for Drexel.
Bruce Bickford made a career-high 22 saves in goal and kept the Dragons in the game in the first half. He had 13 saves in the first half as the Cavaliers had 30 shots at intermission. For the game, Virginia outshot the Dragons, 61-24. Virginia’s Kip Turner had seven saves before being replaced with just under seven minutes to play by Bud Petit. Petit finished with five saves.
Virginia returns to action Monday with its home opener against Denver. The game is scheduled to start at 4 pm and will be played on the UHall Turf Field.
