Charlottesville, Va. – Men’s Lacrosse Defeats Stony Brook 17-4Cavaliers win 13th consecutive home game
Virginia scored six goals in the first 11 minutes of the game, while holding Stony Brook scoreless for more than 37 minutes to gain a 17-4 win over the Seawolves on an unseasonably warm Saturday afternoon at Klöckner Stadium.
The win is Virginia’s 13th in a row at home as the Cavaliers remain undefeated (3-0) this season. Stony Brook was playing its season opener.
The Cavaliers entered the game second in the nation in scoring with an average of 14.0 goals per game and wasted little time getting going. Senior midfielder Matt Poskay scored the first of his three goals less than a minute-and-a-half in on UVa’s first shot of the game. Senior Matt Ward scored on back-to-back shots 50 seconds apart a short time later.
The visitors from Long Island pulled within one at 3-2 on an extra-man goal by junior Sean Chamberlain and sophomore Ryan Hughes. Following Hughes’ goal the Seawolves would not score for the next 37:32.
During Stony Brooks’ scoring drought the Cavaliers rattled off 10 unanswered goals. Senior midfielder Kyle Dixon scored his first goal of the season at the 5:25 mark of the first quarter. Freshman Danny Glading and Ward closed the first quarter scoring as Virginia held a 6-2 lead after 15 minutes of play. Virginia had not been a very good shooting team during the early part of the season but the Cavaliers scored on six of their first 10 shots in the game.
Ward led the way with a game-high four goals (all in the first half), while Poskay and freshman Garrett Billings tallied three times. All-American midfielder Kyle Dixon had his best game of the season and finished with two goals and three assists.
Virginia scored four times in the second quarter and three in the third to take a 13-2 lead into the fourth quarter. Head coach Dom Starsia substituted liberally in the fourth quarter as all 35 active players played.
Senior Jason Cappadoro, the Seawolves’ leading scorer last year, scored his first goal of the season to end Virginia’s scoring run 1:21 into the final quarter. Cavalier freshmen Billings, Steve Giannone and Gavin Gill scored in a three-minute span and junior Adam Fassnacht tallied the first goal of his career to close the UVa scoring. Chamberlain scored his second goal of the afternoon with 1:50 remaining on the clock.
Virginia held big advantages in shots (53-25) and ground balls (63-44). Junior goalie Brendan Callahan had 15 saves for the Seawolves before being replaced by senior Errol Wilson with 10 minutes to go; Wilson stopped seven shots.
Kip Turner started in goal for Virginia and made seven saves before being replaced by Bud Petit late in the third quarter. Petit had one save in 15 minutes before giving way to Doug Brody with 2:13 remaining. Brody had two saves.
Senior Charlie Glazer helped the Cavaliers consistently gain possession by winning 12 of 14 faceoffs. He also finished with a game-high 10 ground balls.
Virginia returns to action Tuesday (Feb. 28) at 4 pm against VMI at Klöckner Stadium. Stony Brook hosts Harvard next Saturday at 1 pm.
