Men's Lacrosse Downs VMI 21-4

Charlottesville, Va. – Virginia’s men’s lacrosse team remained undefeated following a 21-4 win over VMI this afternoon at Klöckner Stadium in the first meeting between the two schools since 1997. The Cavaliers are now 4-0, while the Keydets fall to 0-2 this season.
Virginia scored the game’s first eight goals and led 10-2 after 15 minutes of play. Eight different Cavaliers got into the scoring column in the opening quarter as UVa outshot the Keydets 23-4. For the game Virginia had a 60-11 shot advantage. Midfielders Drew Thompson and Will Barrow both scored twice in the quarter, their first goals of the season.
The visiting Keydets got on the scoreboard late in the first quarter on back-to-back goals 39 seconds apart by twins Robert and David Trimble.
Freshman Steve Giannone netted his second goal of the game, while Ryan Kelly and Adam Fassnacht also scored in the second quarter as the Cavaliers built a 13-2 lead at halftime.
Cavalier head coach Dom Starsia used all 35 active players, including many who saw the most extensive action of their careers.
VMI’s Will Collier opened the second half scoring and teammate David Jacobs tallied an extra-man goal that sandwiched goals by Jack Riley, Foster Gilbert and Kelly as UVa took a 16-4 lead into the fourth quarter.
Virginia scored all five fourth quarter goals, including two by freshman Joe Dewey, the first of his career, and one by redshirt freshman Kevin Coale, the first of his career.
Kip Turner started in goal for Virginia and allowed two goals in 17 minutes before being replaced by Bud Petit. Petit stopped two shots and gave up a goal before giving way to Doug Brody. Brody allowed one goal in his 20-minute stint.
Fassnacht won eight of 12 faceoffs and snared a game-high seven groundballs. Virginia won 18 of 27 faceoffs overall.
Dan Frank opened between the pipes for the Keydets and surrendered seven goals and had three saves before he left the game late in the first quarter. Freshman Josh Blechman replaced Collier and recorded nine saves, while relinquishing nine goals, in 36 minutes in his debut.
The Cavaliers return to action at home this Saturday in their annual clash against Syracuse. The game is scheduled to faceoff at 3 pm and will follow the UVa vs. Syracuse women’s game that begins at noon. VMI travels to Louisville, Ky., to play Bellarmine Saturday at 1 pm.
