Charlottesville, Va. – Virginia used an eight-goal run to break open a close contest and gain a 16-5 win over Mount St. Mary’s before 641 chilly fans Tuesday night at Klöckner Stadium. While the offense was extending the lead, the defense was pitching a shutout as the Mountaineers were held scoreless for a span of 38:30.

With the win, the second-ranked Cavaliers remain undefeated this season with a 7-0 overall record. This is Virginia’s best start since the 1973 squad also started 7-0. The win is also the Cavaliers’ 16th consecutive home win, a school record. Meanwhile, The Mount falls to 0-4 this spring.

Freshman midfielder Steve Giannone led the Cavalier offense with three goals and an assist, while fellow middie Drew Garrison notched three goals. Virginia got balanced scoring as 10 different players scored.

Senior Charlie Glazer, who came into the game with a 66.7 winning percentage, tied a Virginia record by winning all 11 faceoffs. Scott Coulter also won all 11 faceoffs he took against Virginia Tech in 1980. Glazer also snagged a game-high six ground balls. Overall the Cavaliers won 21 of 25 faceoffs and finished with 67 ground balls, nearly double The Mount’s total (34). Virginia also outshot the Mountaineers by 37 (59-22).

Senior midfielder Tilghman Herring scored his first two goals of the season to lead The Mount. Goalie Joe Zolezzi was tremendous, making 18 saves in the first half. He was replaced by Chris Channing for the second half; Channing finished with seven saves.

Herring opened the scoring after 1:43 elapsed by putting the Mountaineers’ first shot of the game in the goal. Giannone answered quickly with his first goal of the evening. Will Barrow and Ben Rubeor added goals in the next two minutes to extend the Cavaliers’ lead to 3-1. Jason Werner scored at the 6:45 mark on The Mount’s next possession following Rubeor’s goal.

Zolezzi recorded 10 saves in the first quarter to keep the game close, but the Cavaliers scored all five goals in the second quarter to open a 9-2 halftime lead. Rubeor scored a man-down goal, UVa’s first goal of the second quarter, his third such goal of the season.

With his team holding an 11-2 lead going into the fourth quarter, UVa head coach Dom Starsia played reserves exclusively in the quarter. All 36 players in uniform saw action for UVa.

Virginia returns to action at 1 pm Sunday (March 19) at Towson. The game will be televised by WMAR-ABC2 in the Baltimore area. It will also be aired on ESPNU at 5 pm that day on a tape delay basis.
