GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia women’s basketball swept the first Atlantic Coast Conference weekly honors of the new year. Junior Sharneé Zoll (Marlboro, N.J.) earned ACC Player of the Week honors, while freshman Monica Wright (Woodbridge, Va.) has been named the ACC Rookie of the Week.
Last week Zoll led Virginia to two wins on the week en route the Marriott Cavalier Classic team championship. In Thursday’s win over Maine, Zoll recorded her first double-double of the season (fourth of her career) with 17 points, a season-high 10 assists, and a season-high four steals. It marked the fifth time that Zoll has recorded double-digit assists in her career. In Friday’s win over UAB in the championship game, the point guard had 15 points and nine assists. For her efforts, Zoll was named the tourney’s Most Valuable Player. After 13 games, Zoll stands third in team scoring with 12.1 ppg while leading UVa with 73 assists. With her two games on the week, Zoll moved up to No. 6 on UVa’s career assists list with 433 in 77 games.
The ACC honor is the first for Zoll in her collegiate career.
Wright also helped UVa to the 2006 Marriott Cavalier Classic championship with two wins. In Thursday’s win over Maine, the frosh scored 11 second-half points. In Friday win over UAB in the championship game, Wright led UVa with a game-high 20 points. She went 9-of-10 from the free throw line. After 13 games, Wright stands second in team scoring with 13.2 ppg. The freshman, who has started all 13 games, also stands second is assists with 40.
The ACC weekly honor is the fourth for Wright this season. The frosh has also earned the Conference honor on Nov. 20, Dec. 4, and Dec. 11.
Virginia (10-3) travels to intra-state rival Richmond on Wednesday, Jan. 3 for a 7 p.m. game at the Robins Center. UVa then opens the ACC slate at No. 2/2 North Carolina on Monday, Jan. 8 at 7 p.m. The Regional Sports Network will televise the game live regionally.
