CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) -Sean Singletary scored a career-high 37 points and hit seven of Virginia’s school-record 18 3-pointers Wednesday night in a 108-87 victory against Gonzaga.
Singletary scored 21 in the first half as Virginia (9-3) made 12 3-pointers, shot 60 percent from three-point range and dominated the entire way to lead 60-26 at halftime. Mamadi Diane added 22 points and J.R. Reynolds had 15 as the Cavaliers improved to 8-0 at home.
Gonzaga (9-6) never got closer than 26 until the final minutes. The Bulldogs got 26 points from Derek Raivio, all but five in the second half, and 16 from Sean Mallon.
Singletary, who scored 33 points and combined with Reynolds for 59 in a 91-70 victory against American a week ago, hit three 3-pointers in the first 2:39. The first came from about 20 feet, the second from about 24 and the third from about 28. The last one also sparked an 18-2 run as the Bulldogs went six minutes without a field goal.
Gonzaga’s biggest run was 6-2, getting them within 34-17, but Reynolds hit a 13-footer and then a 25-footer to spark a 21-8 burst that made it 55-22 with 2:38 left.
Gonzaga made only eight field goals and shot 27 percent in the first half,.
Singletary, whose previous best of 35 points came against the Bulldogs last year in Washington, finished 9-for-16 overall, 7-for-12 on 3-pointers and 12-for-14 at the line. He also had five rebounds and three steals.
