CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia men’s tennis team is ranked No. 8 in the preseason rankings released by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association on Tuesday. It marks the third consecutive season that the Cavaliers have opened the year ranked in the top ten.
In addition to the Cavaliers, most of Virginia’s 2007 opponents are also ranked in the preseason rankings. The Cavaliers will play 20 ranked opponents this season, including nine of the top 15 (No. 2 Baylor, No. 5 Illinois, No. 7 Duke, No. 10 Pepperdine, No. 11 Miami, No. 12 Texas, No. 13 Notre Dame, No. 14 VCU, and No. 15 Florida State).
In the preseason singles rankings, Virginia is the only school to have two players ranked in the preseason top 10. Junior Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) is No. 8, while fellow junior Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va.) is No. 10. The two are also ranked No. 7 in the preseason doubles rankings.
The Cavaliers will kick off the dual match schedule on January 24 when they visit William & Mary. Virginia will open its home schedule later that week when No. 13 Notre Dame and No. 5 Illinois visit the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club on January 26 and January 28 respectively.
On Tuesday, the ITA also announced the preseason women’s rankings. The Virginia women’s team is No. 25 in the rankings.
