CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia men’s tennis team has announced the addition of two players to this year’s roster. Junior Ted Angelinos (Athens, Greece) and freshman Houston Barrick (Brentwood, Tenn.) officially joined the program Wednesday as they took part in their first practice.
“We are excited to have these two players join our program,” said head coach Brian Boland. “Ted and Houston are not only high level players that will make an immediate impact for us, but they are also great people and terrific students off the court. We are looking forward to working with them and seeing them develop.”
Angelinos is a transfer from Tulane, where the program was cut in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. He was a second-team All-Conference USA honoree in 2005 for the Green Wave as he primarily played No. 3 and No. 4 singles, along with No. 2 doubles. He has also been ranked in the top 800 of both the ATP singles and doubles rankings in his career.
Barrick signed a national letter of intent in November to join the Cavaliers, but comes to Virginia for the spring after graduating high school early. Barrick is listed as the nation’s No. 8 recruit by tennisrecruiting.net. Last year, he won the USTA Spring National Championship, while also finishing as the doubles runner-up at the event. He has been ranked No. 1 in the USTA Boys 18’s national rankings.
Angelinos and Barrick join a Cavalier team that is ranked No. 8 in the ITA preseason rankings. The Cavaliers will kick off the dual match schedule on January 24 when they visit William & Mary. Virginia will open its home schedule later that week when No. 13 Notre Dame and No. 5 Illinois visit the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club on January 26 and January 28 respectively.
