TAMPA, Fla. – Two members of the Virginia men’s tennis team continued their run at the USTA Futures Event this week in Tampa, Fla. Junior Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) has reached the quarterfinals of the main draw, and Devvarman and fellow junior Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va.) have reached the finals of doubles.

Devvarman advanced to the quarterfinals with a win Thursday over Russian Pavel Cherkov, 7-6, 7-6. He will play Conor Niland, a former All-American at Cal, in the quarterfinals on Friday. Last season, Niland defeated Cavalier Rylan Rizza in the second round of the NCAA Championships. Niland opened the tournament by upsetting the No. 1 seed in the draw, Benedikt Dorsch, who was the 2005 NCAA Singles Champion at Baylor.

In doubles the duo rallied for a semifinal win over top seeded Goran Dragicevic and Dusan Vemic, 2-6, 6-1, 6-1. The team will play the team of James Cerretani and Antonio Ruiz in the finals on Saturday. Ruiz was a member of the Georgia team that defeated the Cavaliers in the quarterfinals of last year’s NCAA Tournament.

The tournament runs through the weekend in Tampa.

The other members of the Cavaliers will be competing this weekend at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club at the UVa Men’s Open.
